Spencer A. Richards is a partner whose practice focuses on Professional Liability, General Liability, and the defense of high exposure construction liability claims.
Spencer has successfully defended lawyers, accountants, agents and brokers, other professionals, and businesses in cases arising from a wide range of legal areas such as commercial litigation, intellectual property, cyber security liability, real estate, tax law, family law, Judiciary Law §487 violations, personal injury, and trusts and estate law in all phases of litigation in federal and state court.
Spencer has also represented large corporations in complex commercial litigation class actions, and property owners and large construction companies in high exposure personal injury and product liability claims.
Spencer has successfully argued numerous appeals at the state level involving attorney malpractice, professional liability and general liability. He has also successfully represented professionals in the Circuit Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and Second Circuit.
Prior to joining Furman Kornfeld & Brennan LLP, Spencer served as the judicial law clerk to the Honorable Michelle Hollar-Gregory (Ret.) in the Essex County Superior Court – Law Division. He later worked for a firm in Morristown, New Jersey, focusing on employment litigation, insurance defense, and commercial real estate.
Spencer frequently lectures to lawyers on various professional malpractice subjects, including Judiciary Law § 487 claims, cyber security liability, appellate practice, and best practices to avoid LPL claims, and he has written numerous articles on cyber security liability claims, professional malpractice, bankruptcy claims, and business succession plans. Spencer was also selected for the 2020, 2021, and 2022 Super Lawyers New York Metro Rising Stars list, which recognizes the top 2.5 percent of attorneys in the state.
